We recently completed a short promotional animation of an Offshore Drilling Rig
created for association for Austin Visuals.

Here is the clip on Youtube: http://youtu.be/z9Mipp5jX1U

This animation is an overview of an off shore drilling platform. It includes a construction segment as well as  close-ups and fly-around shots of the rig in action.

SMMA - Part III

Symphony Court Luxury Residences

In March we completed four interiors for the luxury condominiums at 41 Westland Street in Boston. The client wanted images for their website as well as large scale prints, stipulating they wanted a dramatic look to appeal to their contemporary demographic. The schedule was very tight, so we employed an off-site render farm to take rendering time out of the equation.

We rendered these at 300 dpi and 7000 pixels in the long dimension.

The Solar Cairn, LAGI  2012

The Land Art Generator Initiative

Last year we worked with Brand Graphics to prepare illustrations for their design submission to the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) design competition in 2012. The resulting renderings were in a group exhibit at the Jam Jar in Dubai in January, and will be published in the book Regenerative Infrastructures, due out in June.

Onion 3D has also produced a short film for an upcoming exhibit to be held at the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, New York. The exhibit will feature the shortlisted entries in the 2012 competion.

The Solar Cairn

As a softly shining pattern of arching, translucent shapes by day or a subtle glowing form on a distant hilltop at night, the Solar Cairn represents a meditative landmark for human visitors while Freshkills’ more indigenous inhabitants will find cover within its bounds. Positioned on the north side of East Mound, it is located on 5 acres of the design site affording maximum sunlight per year. Borne from the concept that humanity is inexorably linked to the earth and sun, the Cairn gently rises out of the summit of the human-made landform. It is developed in parallel to the idea of cairns found in Europe through the ages as navigational guideposts, or commemorating a cemetery outside community boundaries. The Solar Cairn as an acknowledgement of Freshkills Landfill's 60+ year history; it is a landmark serving as a reminder of the consequences of over-consumption as well as the advantages and disadvantages of a throw-away society. It also stands as a guidepost on Freshkills’ long journey back towards a more natural state

SMMA -  Part IV

Cambridge Savings Bank

We created interior renderings of a small branch of Cambridge Savings Bank for SMMA. Starting with BIM data we built the custom casework, finishes and lighting, we showed the lobby and an adjoining conference room. These images had to express the mixture of the architect's vision while staying within the client's branding.

Keurig Corporate Headquarters

This year has been busy at Onion 3D. We completed several projects for Symmes, Maini, & McKee in Cambridge, MA. In January we did 2 exterior views of the new Keurig Corporate Headquarters in Burlington, MA.

We combined existing CAD, Sketchup and BIM data to create 2 exterior renderings. The images needed to express a sense of vibrant life that the new building will provide both to employees and the community.

Working closely with designers, we chose to render in passes to tweak the colors of the building in order to match the specified finishes "on the fly". Although lighting affects color dramatically, we had to cheat a bit to get the cladding materials to resemble the chosen metal panels, precast concrete and glazing.

SMMA - Part II

State Street Corporation

For this project our goal was to show an open break room as the hub of collaborative work spaces.  We used BIM and CAD data brought into 3ds Max. We remodeled about half of the geometry, including furniture, casework, ceiling system, and the textured glass wall.
As with most projects, remaining flexible up to final delivery is crucial. We chose to render to about 80 - 90% complete and did the remaining adjustments in Photoshop.
